Paris, often referred to as the "City of Light," has long captivated travelers from around the world with its timeless elegance, rich history, and unmatched cultural influence. From the iconic Eiffel Tower to the charming cobblestone streets of Montmartre, Paris is a city that invites exploration, evokes romance, and promises an unforgettable experience for all who visit. My family and I had the best time on our last visit and can't wait to go back.

1. The Iconic Landmarks

No visit to Paris is complete without seeing its most famous landmarks. The Eiffel Tower, one of the world’s most recognizable structures, stands tall on the Seine River and offers breathtaking views of the city from its observation decks. You can enjoy a picnic in the park beneath its iron frame or take a cruise along the Seine to enjoy Paris' stunning architecture without all the walking!

Pro tip: Purchase Skip-the-Line tickets for the Eiffel Tower ahead of time.

Next, the majestic Notre-Dame Cathedral remains a symbol of Gothic architecture and religious history. Sadly, it was still closed when we visited so we were only able to view it from the outside. But what a great reason to go back to Paris when it reopens in Dec 2024!

The Louvre Museum, home to the enigmatic Mona Lisa and thousands of priceless works of art, should also be high on your list. Even if you're not an art lover, the museum’s architecture and history are awe-inspiring. Yes, it's crowded but it is 100% worth it.

Pro tip: there will be a long queue to see Mona Lisa. Don't let that stop you from getting an up-close look. The line goes quickly.

And don’t forget the Champs-Élysées avenue, stretching from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde, where you can experience Parisian grandeur and shop at world-renowned boutiques. Or another neat shopping experience can be found at the Galleries Lafayette, the most beautiful shopping mall I have ever been to. And while in the area, hop into Opéra Garnier a stunning architectural masterpiece, renowned for its grandeur and opulence. Completed in 1875, this historic opera house features an intricate façade, a majestic marble staircase, and a striking ceiling painted by Marc Chagall. The Opéra Garnier is not only a place for world-class performances but also a symbol of Parisian elegance, attracting both art lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike.

2. Off the Beaten Path Experience

Beneath the bustling streets of Paris lies a hidden world of macabre history—the Catacombs of Paris. This underground ossuary, a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers, holds the remains of over six million Parisians. The Catacombs are a chilling yet fascinating attraction, with a self-guided tour lasting about an hour. While it’s a unique way to explore Paris' past, be prepared for narrow, damp tunnels and a dark, reflective atmosphere. This is not a typical tourist site but rather an eerie yet historically significant experience, providing a chilling contrast to the beauty and vibrancy above ground.

3. Wander the Streets of Paris at Dusk

As the day fades, the soft golden light bathes the city, casting a warm glow on its iconic architecture. Our favorite moments were spent meandering through the quiet streets, taking in the intricate details of Parisian buildings—gilded balconies, historic stone facades, and hidden courtyards. The city feels different at dusk, as the crowds thin out and a sense of calm settles over Paris. Café terraces glow softly, inviting you to pause for a moment with a warm drink, while the hum of the city shifts to a more peaceful rhythm. Whether strolling along the banks of the Seine, passing by the ornate Place de la Concorde, or weaving through the quaint lanes of Le Marais, walking in Paris at sunset is an experience that captures the heart and soul of the city and most certainly captured our hearts.

4. The Parisian Café Culture

One of the quintessential Parisian experiences is sitting in a café, sipping espresso or an Aperol Spritz while watching the world go by. The café culture is more than just a pastime—it's a way of life. Paris cafés are where locals meet for conversation, where writers and artists sketch their ideas, and where visitors can feel the pulse of the city.

We couldn't travel to Paris and not experience one of the oldest and most icon cafes, Les Deux Magots in Saint-Germain for a quintessential Parisian moment. Since its opening in 1885, this cafe has hosted some of history’s most brilliant minds, including Hemingway, Picasso, James Joyce, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Gertrude Stein. Alex even tried escargot here!

5. A Feast for the Senses

Paris is a food lover's dream. From gourmet dining experiences in Michelin-starred restaurants to casual crepes on the street, the city offers a wide variety of flavors and culinary experiences.

We had the pleasure of dining at two Michelin-starred restaurants, along with some charming off-the-beaten-path brasseries and cafés. While the Michelin experiences were unforgettable, our favorite meal was at a cozy little brasserie, Les Presles, just a short 15-minute walk from the Eiffel Tower. This intimate spot, with only about 10 tables and a small menu scrawled on a chalkboard, offered an incredibly delicious duck dish—très magnifique! It was a truly special find.

Pro Tip: Avoid dining at the restaurants right next to the Eiffel Tower—they’re overpriced and underwhelming, catering mostly to tourists. For better food at more reasonable prices, take a short stroll a few blocks away and discover some hidden gems like we did.

Conclusion

Whether you’re marveling at world-class art, savoring exquisite French cuisine, or simply walking along the Seine, Paris offers an endless array of experiences that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime. Known for its romantic charm, cultural richness, and artistic legacy, the City of Light is a place where dreams come alive. No matter how many times you visit, Paris will always have something new to offer, making each trip a unique and unforgettable adventure.
